Welcome to the website of Jonathan Kay, a.k.a. Shoes (why?). Here you'll find a collection of my writings and a whole bunch of other stuff.

New! - Dull and Dullards: The death of rock and roll in Britain and America.

This really is the only decent picture of myself I have. I'm accompanied by Verne Troyer of Austin Powers 2 fame, who I bumped into at San Jose airport, California.

About me

I have just had another relapse of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia. For a full statement on my present condition click here.

I am 23 years old and can juggle with three balls, but not four.

Recent likes: New hi-fi separates and CDs from Burning Heart to play on them. Deliverance and One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest on DVD. Playing the gee-tar.

Recent dislikes: Turntables that break down after an hour's use, courier companies that leave expensive hi-fi equipment on patios in cold and rain

I used to work in web design, but I'm out of that game now (hence the minimalist look of this site). I was training as a journalist until my recent bad news.

I got a letter published in The Guardian!

Columns for Fracture fanzine

I've written for Fracture, the UK's finest bi-monthly independent music publication for a couple of years now. I've written about many things, but strangely never bands or anything to do with music whatsoever. A selection of my articles can be found here.

A short story

I wrote this story, 'The Classifieds Information' whilst in hospital with my second bout of leukaemia. Contains strong language and weak characters (I'm told).

Sausages

What does PearlJamiroQuietRiot mean to you? This is a stupid game which is great for wasting time in the office, postponing that essay and so on. Here's how to play.

My Dissertation

I was an awarded a first class degree by the University of Greenwich for this little number. I never received any feedback from my tutors however and I suspect they never bothered to visit it. It's all about online and digital broadcasting issues, if you're interested in such things take a look.
